Outdoor learning outcomes are the measurable changes researchers can attribute â or attempt to attribute â to teaching students outside four walls: classroom engagement, attention, behavior, physical activity, stress, and the question everyone actually cares about, test scores. The research pool behind that phrase pulls from place-based education, environmental education, Denmark’s udeskole tradition, Britain’s forest schools, Attention Restoration Theory, and a growing stack of green schoolyard studies. If you run a K-8 school where the yard is asphalt, the curriculum arrives scripted, and the bus budget rounds to zero, you cannot afford to sort the good studies from the press releases by trial and error. The one finding I would stake a planning period on
The most useful study ever published for a school with an asphalt yard is, in my view, “Do Lessons in Nature Boost Subsequent Classroom Engagement? Refueling Students in Flight” (Kuo, Browning, and Penner, PLOS ONE, 2018). One teacher. Two third-grade classrooms. Ten weeks. Each lesson in the sequence got taught twice â same objectives, same script, once inside, once at a grassy patch steps from the door â while raters including independent observers scored how each class ran for the rest of the day.
The outside versions won. They won in the large majority of paired comparisons, they won in both classrooms, and the pattern never faded across ten weeks. The teacher spent less time redirecting, and observers who did not know the hypothesis saw what the teacher saw. The authors’ image has stayed with me for years: a plane refueling in flight. You do not stop teaching to go outside; the outside lesson refuels the teaching that follows it.
Honest limits: one school, one teacher, one fall semester. That is a pilot, not a moon shot. Short answer: the causal chain from “outside” to “test scores” is long, and the direct evidence is thin. A systematic review by Browning and Rigolon (Frontiers in Psychology, 2019) found that greener school surroundings predict modestly better test performance â but nearly every study in it was correlational, and none could fully separate “greener yard” from “wealthier enrollment.” The honest reading: greenery travels with money, and money travels with scores.
What this means Monday: when a slide deck claims scores, ask what it controlled for. In most studies the honest answer is “not the enrollment,” and any reviewer who checks will find it.
The biggest implementation trial I trust is Britain’s Natural Connections project (Waite et al., 2016): four years, 126 schools, led out of Plymouth with government funding. The reported gains were engagement, motivation, and behavior â plus, in the finding administrators should underline, teacher confidence. The binding constraint was never student capacity. It was staff training and support.
What this means Monday: put training money in the grant before trail money. Your constraint is staff confidence, and that is the cheapest thing on the list to move.

How to read this research without getting burned
I have lost a clipboard to a puddle, a whiteboard to a gust, and two planning periods to a district slide deck that misquoted its own citation. A filter for the next deck:
- Matched comparisons beat surveys. If teachers chose to go outside, their enthusiasm contaminates their ratings. Mine would too.
- Effect size over p-value. “Statistically significant” can describe a difference the size of a pencil eraser detected across 4,000 students.

Dose over destination: the operational read for asphalt schools
Denmark’s udeskole â “outdoor school” â sends classes outside on a regular schedule, often one full day a week, with the curriculum attached rather than bolted on. Mygind’s 2007 field work found children moved more on outdoor teaching days with no loss in the quality of seated work afterward. How much time outside does the research support?

Does this work on asphalt, or do we need a garden?
The engagement study used a grass patch steps from the door, not wilderness. Asphalt works as a venue for lessons; what it does not do is shade, cool, or calm. Buy shade first, vegetation second, and treat the blacktop as your floor plan, not your verdict.
What about cold weather?
