Start Where Students Are: The Pizza Party Problem
Picture this scenario I love using with my students: Your school is planning a pizza party for 200 people, and you need to figure out how many pizzas to order. Most students immediately grab their phones to search “how many pizzas for 200 people” or ask friends what they think. But here’s where we pause and say, “Wait. What questions should we ask first?”

This simple problem becomes our entry point into critical thinking because it meets students exactly where they are. They understand pizza parties. They’ve been to them. But they haven’t necessarily thought about all the variables involved: How hungry will people be? What size pizzas? Are there vegetarians? What’s the budget? Suddenly, what seemed like a straightforward math problem turns out to be much more complex.
Starting with concrete, familiar examples works because it takes away the intimidation factor. Students aren’t worried about sounding smart or using fancy vocabulary. They’re just thinking through a real problem, which is exactly what critical thinking is. Once they experience that “aha” moment of realizing they need more information, they’ve taken their first genuine step into analytical reasoning.

The Foundation: Teaching Students to Ask Better Questions
After working through our pizza problem, students quickly realize that jumping to solutions without gathering information leads to poor decisions. This opens the door to what I consider the foundation of critical thinking: question formulation. But not just any questions. We need to teach students how to ask questions that actually move their thinking forward.
I start by showing students the difference between surface questions and depth questions using another concrete example. If we’re reading about a historical event, a surface question might be “When did this happen?” But a depth question asks, “What conditions made this event possible?” or “Who benefited from this outcome?” Surface questions have right-or-wrong answers you can Google. Depth questions require you to synthesize information, consider multiple perspectives, and sometimes sit comfortably with uncertainty.
Here’s a practical framework I teach: Before diving into any problem or text, students learn to ask three types of questions. Clarification questions help them understand what they’re really dealing with (“What exactly is being claimed here?”). Evidence questions push them to consider proof and sources (“How do we know this? What’s the evidence?”). Implication questions encourage them to think about consequences and connections (“If this is true, then what follows? What are we not considering?”).
The magic happens when students make this questioning process automatic. I watch quiet students who never participated suddenly become engaged because they have tools for entry into discussions. They’re not trying to sound smart anymore, they’re genuinely curious and have a system for exploring that curiosity.
Building the Thinking Bridge: From Concrete Examples to Abstract Concepts
Once students are comfortable questioning and gathering information, we need to help them see patterns and make connections. This is where many critical thinking efforts fail because we rush into abstract reasoning before students have enough concrete experiences to draw from. Instead, I use what I call “thinking bridges” to help students move gradually from specific examples to broader principles.
Let’s return to our pizza party problem, but now we’ll extend it. After students work through the pizza calculation, I present them with similar resource allocation problems: planning a school garden, organizing a book fair, scheduling tutoring sessions. Each problem has the same underlying structure, but different surface details. Students begin to recognize patterns in their problem-solving process without me ever lecturing about “resource allocation” or “optimization.”
This pattern recognition is necessary because it helps students transfer their thinking skills to new situations. When they encounter a completely different problem later, they can think, “This reminds me of when we planned the pizza party. What questions did I ask then that might help me here?” They’re building their own toolkit of thinking strategies based on successful experiences.
The key is giving students enough varied practice with similar underlying concepts so they can extract the general principles themselves. When a student suddenly exclaims, “Oh, this is just like the pizza problem, but with books!” they’ve made that leap from concrete to abstract thinking. They own that insight in a way they never would if I had simply told them about resource allocation from the start.
Putting It All Together: The Daily Practice of Critical Thinking
Critical thinking isn’t a special skill we pull out for big projects or tests. It’s a daily practice that becomes second nature when we embed it consistently in classroom routines. I’ve found that students need multiple, low-stakes opportunities to practice their developing skills before they can apply them to high-pressure situations.
One of my favorite daily practices is what I call “Think-First Fridays.” Every Friday, I present students with a brief, engaging scenario that requires them to pause and think before acting. Maybe it’s a news headline that seems too shocking to be true, or a social media post claiming an amazing life hack, or a graph showing surprising statistics. Students have learned to automatically ask: What’s my first reaction? What questions should I ask? What information do I need? What are alternative explanations?
These brief, regular practices build critical thinking stamina. Students learn to catch themselves before jumping to conclusions in their daily lives. They start questioning claims in their social media feeds, asking follow-up questions in conversations, and approaching problems with curiosity rather than anxiety. Parents often tell me they notice their children asking more thoughtful questions at home, and students report feeling more confident in discussions and decision-making.
The most powerful part of this daily practice is that students begin to see critical thinking not as an academic exercise, but as a life skill that works everywhere. They realize that the same thinking process that helped them plan a pizza party can help them evaluate college options, understand political debates, or make financial decisions.
